In this course students generally undertake their formal and supervised research training over a period of three and half years full-time up to five years full-time or four years part-time up to eight years part-time. Research can be undertaken at Swinburne, or an approved external organisation. A major thesis is the sole form of assessment for this award. Candidates carry out a program of research, investigation or development involving the submission of a substantial major thesis embodying the results of that program and presented as a coherent whole work.
Entry requirements:
Applicants should have a 1st class or upper 2nd class honours degree or equivalent in a discipline appropriate to the proposed area of study. The level of academic achievement in prior studies should be of a very high standard. Other relevant activities, including work experience, will be taken into account in assessing applications. Students should also fulfil any one of the following English language requirements: IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 575 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5) or a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 85 with no band less than 18.

The Hawthorn campus maintains the Universities central administration and is the site for many of Swinburne’s research and training centres. Students have the opportunity to gain a qualification in everything from a Certificate I to a PhD. Courses are available in Arts, Psychology and Social Sciences, Business, Commerce and Management, Engineering and Technology, Information and Communication Technology and Science. The campus is approximately a one minute walk from Glenferrie station. Belgrave, Lilydale and Alamein train lines from the city travel to Glenferrie station in 10 minutes.

This campus offers only on-campus residential college style accommodation suited to first year or international exchange students provides a safe and supportive environment. For more independent students furnished student apartments are available for sharing with one or two other students. The two styles of accommodation are home to 235 students each year. The other accommodation options available are UniLodge, Lilydale Student Village and Offcampus housing.
