I have made lots of friends at uni. Having moved up here from the city, I knew nobody and am so grateful for the friends I have found. Its made university life so great and memorable.
The requirement to be accepted into the program was achieving a certain UAI. My first preference was Sydney University but I missed out on the score for that and so decided to come to Newcastle to study the course which had a much lower requirement. The application was made online, through UAC, where we list 9 preferences. It is a simple and easy process and I had no trouble.
Unfortunately, I dont think there are any scholarships specifically for my course. There are a number of scholarships for people studying at Newcastle but I did not qualify for any of them. I receive money from the government as I am living away from home (rent assistance etc).
The course is very interesting. We learn all about how speech works and what is actually happening when things go wrong. The best part will be the clinical part that I eventually do. We get experience working in the field so were not thrown in the deep end when we graduate. Hours vary depending on the subjects, but its no more than 20 hours per week.
The local area is very different to where I was brought up. At first I felt uncomfortable and did not really enjoy it. I was used to being busy and having lots to do all the time. It felt weird to move to a place that is so much more slow-paced and carefree. Eventually I got used to it and actually prefer the slowness. I get agitated and stressed when I move back to Sydney over the holidays. People are so different too. Everyone is determined and full of purpose in Sydney on the verge of crazy I think!
There are ups and downs about taking on such a specialised degree, but I have faith that I will easily find employment as I dont think there are that many Speech pathologists around!
